Calais Comprehensive Treatment Center (CTC) specializes in medication-assisted treatment, or MAT, which is a time-tested approach to opioid addiction treatment. MAT has been closely studied in the United States for decades and has a history of effectiveness that is acknowledged by respected organizations such as the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) and the World Health Organization (WHO). The core components of MAT are prescription medication and counseling. The medications that are offered in MAT can ease the distressing symptoms of opioid withdrawal and suppress intense cravings. Some MAT patients take prescription medication for a short time, while others take it for months or years. These FDA-approved medications have proved to be safe and effective for short- and long-term use when taken with supervision from trained professionals. The counseling component of MAT at our CTC can help patients address the emotional and social aspects of opioid addiction. During these sessions, patients can learn about opioid use disorder and develop skills that can help them achieve recovery.
